Green River Golf Club: From 36 to 18

Green River Golf Club established in 1958 in Corona California has been a 36 hole golf course for over 40 years.  The banks of the scenic Santa Ana River that runs along and through the golf course have eroded over the years and presents a threat to down stream communities should the newly raised Prado Dam release floodwaters.  The Army Corp of Engineers is constructing flood protection improvements all along the Santa Ana River which impacts Green River Golf Club and has resulted in the transition from 36 to 18 holes.

Although the Army Corp of Engineers flood protection construction project is proceeding at full speed, Green River Golf Club’s new 18 hole layout has been received with rave reviews.  Mark Gibbs of Tustin says, “Having played here for many years, I was sad to see nature (river) take control, but very pleasantly surprised with the overall experience.  I look forward to many more rounds at Green River”.  James Thomas commented, “My playing companion and I both agreed that you chose the ‘best of both sides’ in creating the new course.  The course was in great shape – it played well”.

Change is always difficult but Green River Golf Club wears it well.  The new layout incorporates twelve holes from its old Riverside Course and six holes from the old Orange Course. This temporary 18 hole layout will be in use throughout construction which is anticipated to last 1.5 years.  The course is 6635 yards from the blue tees, par 71.6/123 slope, which is 200 yards longer than the previous course.

The construction is quite extensive and can be viewed from the 91 freeway.  Surprisingly, once you enter the property and arrive at the clubhouse you don’t even notice the construction.  Stop in and see what’s going on.
