19살 신예 골퍼 노승열

처음 참가한 메이저 대회에서 공동40위

US오픈에 참가해 13오버파 297타로 공동40위에 오른 노승열은 US 오픈 마지막 선발전인 오하이오 주 스프링필드의 스프링필드 골프 클럽(파70·6601야드)의 36홀 경기에서 5언더파 135타를 기록해 공동 2위에 올라 US 오픈 참가 자격을 얻었다.

2005년 제52회 한국 아마추어 선수권 대회에서 역대 최연소 우승을 차지했고 2005년 역대 최연소 국가대표에 선발되었으며 2006년 APGA(아시아 프로골프투어) 최연소 풀시드 자격을 획득한 데 이어 2007년 프로 전향과 함께 2008년 미디어 차이나 클래식 대회 최연소 우승을 차지했다. 이 우승으로 APGA 역대 세 번째 최연소 우승이라는 기록과 함께 APGA투어 올해의 루키상을 수상했다.

브리티쉬 오픈 참가권도 확보해 놓은 그는 오픈 경기 결과까지 반영하여 상위 세계 랭킹 100위까지 참가할 수 있는 PGA 챔피언십 참가 자격을 얻기 위해 남은 대회까지 최선을 다할 생각이다.

US 오픈 직전까지 109위였던 세계 랭킹이 102위로 올랐고 2계단만 올리면 PGA챔피언십에 참가할 수 있게 된다.

1991년 5월 29일생으로19세인 노승열은 속초교동초등학교 6학년 때 출전한 한국 주니어골프선수권 대회에서 우승과 함께 국가대표 상비군으로 발탁되었고 이어 2년 뒤인 2005년 아마추어골프 최고 권위를 자랑하는 허정구배 한국 아마추어 골프 선수권 대회에서 우승컵을 들어올리며 골프 천재의 세계로 향한 도약을 알렸다. 허정구배 우승으로 최연소로 국가대표 태극마크를 달았다.

프로 전향 이후 줄곧 캐디를 맞고 있는 노구현(49·전 속초농협 상무)씨의 1남1녀 가운데 막내로 태어난 노승열은 초등학교 1학년 때인 1998년 아버지를 따라 골프장에 갔다 처음 골프 클럽을 잡기 시작했다.  

올해 초 유러피언 투어 메이뱅크 말레이시안에서 우승한 노승열은 US 오픈 다음주까지 산호세에 한 주간 머물다가 프랑스로 떠나 유러피언 투어와 오픈에서 시합 한다.

마지막 날 대회 직후 “이곳에서 너무 고생을 해서 다른 골프장에 가면 점수 내기 어려울 것이다.”라고 농담을 건네면서 “페블비치의 골프장 세팅이 너무 어려워 한샷  한샷을 방심하지 않고 중요하게 생각하며 마친 대회였다.”고 말했다.

“꿈이 PGA 대회에 출전하는 것이었는데 US 오픈까지 참가하게 되었고 이 영광 스러운 대회에 이름있는 선수들과의 시합한 것은 많은 보람이고 교훈이었다. 20위 안에는 진입할 수도 있었는데 많지 않은 버디 기회마다 많이 놓쳤다.”고 아쉬워했다.

양용은과 최경주 프로와 연습 라운드를 같이 하면서 그린의 어려움과 코스 공략에 대해 많은 조언을 얻어 도움이 되었다면서 선배 골퍼들에 대한 감사도 잊지 않았다.

일주일 전에 LG와 스폰서 계약을 했는데 바로 보답할 수 있었던 것도 하나의 감사한 이유가 되었다.

노승열은 타이틀리스트, 골프 인 두바이 및 LG와 스폰서 계약이 있다.

골프 선수로서의 소망을 하나 하나 풀어가고 있는 노승열은 프로 골프선수로 성공하면 뒤따라오는 후배들을 돕고 그 경험을 후배들과 함께 나누고 싶다고 한다.

고려대학교 1학년에 재학중이지만 시합 때문에 학교 생활을 많이 하지 못하는 것이 항상 아쉽다.

시합을 위한 여행이 어렵고 힘들지만 어느 음식이나 잘 먹고 어디서든 잘 적응 하는 것도 프로 선수가 되는 한 과정이라 말하는 아버지 노구현 씨는 이승열이  무슨 일이든지 최선을 다하는 것만 바라고 있다. 

19-year-old Rookie Seung-Yeol Noh

Tied for 40th in a major tournament of his first appearance

Seung-Yeol Noh, who tied for 40th at 13-over 297 in the US Open, had won his qualification by tying for 2nd at 5-under 135 in the 36 hole tournament at the Springfield Gold (par 70, 6601 yards) Club in Springfield, Ohio, which was the final qualification tournament for the US Open.

Noh was the youngest player who won the 52nd Korea Amateur Championship in 2005, the youngest player who was selected as a member of the national team in 2005, the youngest player who was entitled for the full seed for the APGA (Asia Pro Golf Association) in 2006, and, after turning to a pro in 2007, the third youngest player who won Midea China Classic in 2008. With the winning in the last, he also won the APGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

Since the world ranking top 100 is qualified for the PGA Championship considering the results of the British Open, he will be doing his best to get the qualification.

After the US Open, his world ranking moved from 109th to 102nd, and now only two steps upward qualifies for the PGA Championship.

19-year-old Noh, born in May 29, 1991, was selected as a regular national team member when he won the Korea Junior Golf Championship at the age of nineteen. In 2005, two years later, he won the Huh Jung-Koo Cup Korea Amateur Golf Championship, which boasts of the highest authority in amateur golf, and announced the leap to the world of golf genius. The win in the Huh Jung-Koo Cup qualified him for the youngest Korea national team member.

Noh, the younger brother of one boy and one girl of Koo-Hyun Noh (49, previous player of Sok Cho Agricultural Cooperative), began playing golf in 1998 when he was in the first grade in an elementary school as he went to a golf course together with his father.
Noh won the European Tour Maybank Malaysian early this year is planning to stay in San Jose for one more week after the US Open and leave for France to participate in the European Tour and Open.

“I had a very hard time here, so it may be hard to get good scores in other golf courses”, joked Noh immediately after the last day of the tournament. “Pebble Beach’s layouts were very tricky, so I was careful enough to consider each shot important.”

Noh regretted “My dream was to participate in a PGA Tour and I did participate in the US Open. It was worthwhile and instructive for me to compete with renowned players in an honorable tournament. I could have been within 20th, but missed few chances for birdie.

He did not forget to thank to senior golfers by admitting that he benefited from the advices about the difficulties of green and course attack from Y. E. Yang and Kyung-Ju Choi pros with whom he had a practice round.

Noh had made a sponsor contract with LG one week ago; he was thankful that he could reward soon.

Noh has sponsors such as Titleist, Golf in Dubai, and LG.

As realizing his hopes as a golfer one by one, Noh wants to help his juniors share his experience with them after succeeding as a pro golfer. He is a freshman in Korea University, but always regrets that he cannot enjoy a regular college life due to tournaments.

His father Koo-Hyun Noh understands the difficulty of traveling for tournaments but advises him to try to enjoy any food and adjust himself anywhere he travels in order to become a good pro. All his father wants is that Noh does his best anytime anywhere.
