북아일랜드 출신 그래엄 맥도웰 우승

페블비치에서 열린 110회 US 오픈 챔피언십

그래엄 맥도웰(북아일랜드)이 제110회 US오픈 챔피언십에서 우승을 차지했다. 그는 미국 캘리포니아주 페블비치 골프링크스(파71, 7천40야드)에서 열린 대회 마지막 날 4라운드에서 버디 1개, 보기 4개로 3타를 잃었으나 최종합계 이븐파 284타로 정상에 올랐다.

세계랭킹 37위 맥도웰은 메이저대회 최고 성적이 지난해 PGA챔피언십 공동 10위였으나, US 오픈에서 우승을 차지하며 1970년 토니 재클린(잉글랜드) 이후 40년 만에 이 대회 정상에 오른 유럽 선수가 됐다.

맥도웰은 2008년 3월 열린 유럽프로골프 발렌타인스 챔피언십에서 우승을 차지했고 지난해 캘리포니아 셔우드 컨츄리클럽에서 열린 쉐브론 챌린징에서 양용은과 마지막 라운드를 치러 한국 골퍼들에게 친숙한 얼굴이기도 하다. 유럽투어 통산 우승은 이달 초 웨일스 오픈 정상에 오른 것을 포함해 다섯 번이다.

AT&T페블비치 프로암 2년 연속 우승자인 더스틴 존슨에게3타나 뒤친채로 티 박스에 올라선 그래엄은 더스틴이 전반 9홀에서 급격하게 무너지는 플레이를 펼치는 동안 스코어를 지켜갔고, 파3의 17번 홀에서 한 타를 잃어 2위로 뒤쫓던 그레고리 아브레(프랑스)에게 1타 차 추격을 허용하기도 했으나 아브레가 18번 홀(파5) 약 2피트 거리에서 시도한 버디 퍼트가 한참을 지나가는 바람에 한숨을 돌린 뒤 침착하게 파를 지켜내며 우승컵을 품에 안았다.

북아일랜드 선수가 메이저대회를 제패한 것은 1947년 브리티시오픈 프레드 댈리 이후 맥도웰이 두 번째다.

맥도웰은 "평생의 꿈이 이뤄졌다. 마지막 홀에서 퍼트를 두 번 하고도 US오픈 우승을 하다니 믿을 수 없는 일이 일어났다."며 기쁨을 감추지 못했다.

1985년 앤디 노스(미국)가 마지막 날 4오버파를 치고도 우승한 이후 US오픈 최종일 가장 저조한 성적을 낸 챔피언이 됐다.

1타 차 2위를 차지한 아브레도 팬들의 시선을 끌기에 충분했다. 세계 랭킹 391위로 지역 예선을 거쳐 본선에 진출한 아브레는 이날 '골프 황제' 타이거 우즈(미국)와 동반 플레이를 펼치면서도 1오버파 72타로 선전하며 끝까지 맥도웰을 괴롭혔다.

어니 엘스(남아공)가 2오버파 286타로 단독 3위에 올랐고, 세계 랭킹 1위를 놓고 경쟁하고 있는 우즈와 필 미켈슨(미국)은 나란히 공동 4위(3오버파 287타)로 대회를 마쳤다.

매트 쿠차와 데이비스 러브 3세(이상 미국)는 4오버파 288타를 기록하며 공동 6위에 올랐다.

3라운드까지 2위에 3타 앞선 단독 1위였던 더스틴 존슨(미국)은 2번 홀 트리플보기, 3번 홀(이상 파4) 더블보기로 일찌감치 무너지는 등 이날만 11타를 잃어 최종합계 5오버파 289타로 공동 8위까지 밀려났다.

노승열(한국)은 이날 버디 1개, 보기 5개로 4오버파를 쳐 최종합계 13오버파 297타 공동 40위, 최경주(한국)는 버디 1개와 보기 4개, 더블보기 2개로 7오버파를 쳐 최종합계 14오버파 298타 공동 47위에 그쳤다.

Graeme McDowell from North Ireland Won

The 110th US Open Championship at Pebble Beach

Graeme McDowell (Northern Ireland) won the 100th US Open Championship. He lost three strokes by shooting one birdie and four bogeys on the final round at the Pebble Beach Golf Links (par 71, 7040 yards), California but could win at total even par 284.  

World Ranking 37th McDowell’s best result in Major was tied 10th at the PGA Championship last year. With the win at the US Open, he became the first European player who won the tournament in forty years since Tony Jacklin (England).

McDowell won the Europe PGA Valentine’s Championship in March 2008 and played in the same group with Y. E. Yang on the final round in Chevron World Challenge at the Sherwood Country Club, California last year, which made him known to Korean golfers. He has a total of five wins in European Tour including the Wales Open early this month.

Getting on the tee box with three strokes behind Tustin Johnson, the winner of AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am two years in a row, Graeme kept his score while Tustin was breaking down rapidly in the front nine. Graeme once allowed Gregory Havret (France) at the 2nd to pursue him by one stroke by losing one stroke on the 17th hole (par 3). As Havret failed his 2-feet birdie putt far past the hole on the 18th hole (par 5), however, Graeme could be relaxed and finally acquire the winner’s cup by keeping the par.

McDowell’s win is the second one in a major tournament won by a Northern Ireland player since Fred Daly in the British Open in 1947.

McDowell could not hide his delight and said, “My lifetime dream has come true. I won the US Open even with two putts on the last hole, I cannot just believe it.”

McDowell won with the poorest score in the final round in the US Open since Andy North (USA) in 1985 who won the even with 4-over par in the final day.

Havret at the 2nd by one stroke also attracted gallery’s attention. Being qualified at a local preliminary match, Havret at the World Ranking 391st played well in the same group with ‘Golf Emperor’ Tiger Woods (USA) and troubled McDowell to the end with 1-over 72 in the final round.

Ernie Els (South Africa) finished at 3rd (2-over 286), and Phil Mickelson (USA) and Woods, competing for World Ranking #1, tied at 4th (3-over 287).

Matt Kuchar (USA) and Davis Love III (USA) tied at 6th with 4-over 288.

Tustin Johnson (USA), having been leading three strokes ahead of the 2nd until the third round, failed early by losing 11 strokes in the final round including a triple bogey in the 2nd hole (par 4) and a double bogey in the 3rd hole (par 4) and was pushed down to the tied 8th with 5-over 289.

SeungYul Noh (Korea) tied at the 40th with final 13-over 297 by shooting 4-over in the final round including one birdie and five bogeys. Kyung Ju Choi stayed at the tied 47th with final 14-over 298 by shooting 7-over that day including one birdie, five bogeys, and two double bogeys.
